Seven years ago, we walked away from what most people would call the American dream to build something that felt real to us. This is the story of how Fat and Weird Cookie began, why we took the risk, and how a thousand mailed cookies changed everything.
Leaving the “Perfect” Life Behind
Back in 2018, our lives looked great on paper. Brad was working as an engineer at a chemical company. I was a speech language pathologist in the public school system. We were married, owned a home, had a dog, stable incomes, and no real debt. From the outside, it was everything people strive for.
But inside, something felt off.
We were comfortable, but we were not fulfilled. There was a creative itch we could not ignore and a feeling that we were meant to build something of our own. Something bold. Something fun. Something a little weird.
The Cookie Experiment That Changed Everything
In April 2018, I did something spontaneous. I posted online asking people to mail cookies to our PO box in Houston. There was no business plan. No expectations. Just curiosity.
What happened next surprised us completely.
Within a few weeks, over one thousand cookies showed up from bakers all over the country. We tasted every single one. Somewhere between the sugar rush and the late nights, a realization hit us hard.
There was a massive gap in the cookie world.
Nobody was making truly over the top, indulgent, stuffed cookies the way we imagined them. Cookies that were unapologetically thick. Cookies that were gooey, rich, creative, and fun. Cookies that felt like an experience, not just a dessert.
That was the moment we asked ourselves the question that changed our lives.
Why not us? Why not now?
Quitting Six Figure Jobs to Start a Cookie Company
Four months later, we made the boldest decision of our lives.
We quit our six figure jobs.
We sold our house.
We packed up everything we owned.
And we moved back to Florida to start a cookie company from scratch.
There were no investors. No bakery. No guarantees. Just family support, a whole lot of risk, and a belief that people would love what we were about to create.
In August 2018, Fat and Weird Cookie was officially born.
The Reality of Starting from Nothing
We thought leaving our stable careers would be the hardest part. We were wrong.
The real challenge began inside our first commissary kitchen. Long nights. Tight spaces. Constant learning. And just months in, we were forced out of that very first kitchen.
Starting was not the hard part. Surviving was.
But every obstacle pushed us to refine our vision. To lean harder into what made us different. To embrace being fat, weird, and completely ourselves.
